Our desire to separate, oppress and label things as “other” is the dark side of being a human being and its basis is rooted in fear. There is no “other,” there is only “us.” We each have a responsibility, whether black, white, male or female, to remove the veil of prejudice; to acknowledge that essentially we are the same. The differences that we do see provide variety, and they are there to add to the sweetness of life. A homogeneous society would be completely boring.
A shift in perspective is all that is required. Once I acknowledge my own fear, and then realize that there is nothing to be afraid of, I no longer have need for prejudice. I can see you for who you truly are…an extension of my own humanity.
