One look around and it’s obvious, people are hurting. It seems like many of us have lost our way. We search desperately for something outside ourselves, a job, a mate, a prettier face, to try to take away the pain, the inadequacy, the boredom. We seek something to fill the void, to make us happy. But unfortunately, focusing on the external has caused more and more of us to come up short, still longing, still desperate. Another purchase, another accolade still leaves us empty handed.
The good news is that it’s a temporary state. Although the longing that we feel seems large and vast and overpowering, it’s nothing more than the call of the self. It’s the call to shift our reliance on the external and material and to focus on the internal. It is the call of spirit; to find our oneness and connection with God and all of humanity and to be more fully and completely ourselves. It is the call to know our own value and the important role we each play in the larger part of humanity. That’s what we are seeking.
The true road that leads to happiness is in uncovering the things within us that have been holding it at bay the whole time. Anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, childhood hurts, insecurities, negative beliefs etc. As we remove, rise above and press into those areas; as those dark states are stripped away and we become more fully ourselves and more aware of our spiritual nature, we find that happiness is a state of being. And as more and more of the dysfunction and madness is removed, we see that it is available to us at all times. Always has been.
